Services

The Somali Police Force provides a range of services to ensure community safety and security in Somalia. These services include crime fighting, traffic control, and human rights observation. They also provide mentoring and advisory support to the community on crime prevention strategies and community policing.

Main responsibilities

Maintenance of Law and Order

The police are responsible for ensuring public order by preventing disturbances, conflicts, and violence. They uphold the rule of law, ensuring that citizens follow legal standards and that peace is maintained in society.

Crime Prevention and Investigation

The SPF works proactively to prevent criminal activities such as theft, assault, and fraud. If crimes do occur, they are tasked with investigating the incidents, collecting evidence, identifying suspects, and bringing them to justice. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) handles most of the investigative work.

Protection of Life and Property

One of the core duties of the police force is to safeguard individuals’ lives and their property. This includes responding to emergencies such as medical situations, accidents, or fires, as well as preventing violence, robbery, and other threats.

Traffic Control and Enforcement

Traffic management is essential for public safety. The Traffic Police are responsible for enforcing road safety laws, regulating traffic flow, conducting checks for driving violations, and responding to road accidents. They also ensure that vehicles meet legal safety standards.

Counter-terrorism (in cooperation with other security forces)

Given the ongoing threat from groups like Al-Shabaab, the police force plays a role in counter-terrorism efforts. This involves working with other national and international security agencies to prevent attacks, disrupt extremist activities, and respond to incidents of terrorism.

Border Security (in some regions)

In regions near international borders, the Somali Police Force is involved in protecting and securing borders to prevent illegal crossings, smuggling, and human trafficking. This task also involves collaborating with other border enforcement agencies and security forces.

Supporting the Judicial System and Enforcing Court Orders

The police work closely with the judicial system by executing court orders, including arrest warrants, bail conditions, and other legal processes. They ensure that individuals involved in legal proceedings are either brought to trial or kept under appropriate supervision, helping to maintain the integrity of the legal system.
