Somali Police Official Highlights Joint Efforts to Prevent Drug Abuse Among Youth

The Head of the Somali Police Force’s Department for the Prevention and Combating of Narcotics and Drugs, Lt. Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed, today participated in the Youth Mental Health & Drug Abuse Prevention Forum 2026 which focused on protecting young people affected by drug abuse.

Lt. Abdirashid Mohamed Ahmed highlighted the importance of joint efforts to prevent drug use and address its impact on the mental health of Somali youth.

He emphasized that preventing drug abuse is not the responsibility of a single institution, but rather an issue that requires cooperation and coordination among security and health institutions, civil society organizations, academics, parents, and young people.

“To build a healthy generation that is mentally strong and free from drug abuse, it is essential for all stakeholders to work together on awareness, prevention, and support for young people,” the head  said.

He further noted that raising awareness among young people and the wider community is a key pillar in reducing the risks associated with drug use, particularly those that directly or indirectly affect mental health, education, social relationships, and the future of young people.

The forum was jointly organized by the Somali Drug Abuse Awareness and Prevention Organization (SDAPO), the Somali Police Force Department for the Prevention and Combating of Narcotics (DPCN), the Banadir Regional Youth Organization, the Somali Medical Students Association (SOMSA), and the Somali Mental Health Association.
